OMS provides professional training to Utah Museums through several programs:

Workshops

OMS offers workshops to address specific needs of the museum community. Please contact us to set up a time and place for workshops; we encourage several museums to cooperate and send people to the workshops.

Workshops available include

  • Documentation (cataloging, policies, and procedures)
  • Collections Care (handling, environmental controls, storage, and exhibition materials)
  • Disaster Planning
  • Photography of museum objects
If there are other topics you would like to have covered in a workshop, please contact us.

Other organizations offering workshops that may be interesting to museum personnel include the Utah Arts Council and Utah State History.

Technical Assistance Outreach

OMS provides training about collections management to museums, including assistance on PastPerfect Museum Software for cataloging collections. We will help set up databases, give on site training to museum staff, and are always available to answer questions via telephone or email.

OMS will also provide onsite consultations to museums on specific problems or questions they may have. Call us for information on this service.

State Performance Goals

State Performance Goals is a project to help museums in Utah realize their full potential. OMS has established a set of goals in an effort to raise the performance level, professionalism, and quality of Utah museums. OMS provides assistance and financial help for museums working to meet the goals. Museums that fulfill the goals receive a state certificate attesting their excellence.

Resource Library

A Resource Library containing a variety of publications is available for museum personnel to use on-site. Copies of the books are available for interlibrary loan from the State Library. Here is a list of available books.

Also see the Arts Council Handbooks.
